Johannes von Hessen-Braubach (born June 17, 1609 in Darmstadt , † April 1, 1651 in Ems ) was Landgrave of Hessen-Braubach and general.

Life

Johannes was a son of Landgrave Ludwig V of Hesse-Darmstadt and his wife Magdalena , a daughter of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg .

After his training he went on the obligatory Cavalier tour with his much younger brother Friedrich von Hessen-Darmstadt , which took him through France and Italy. From August 1, 1627 to March 2, 1628 he was the consiliar of the German nation at the University of Siena .

Johannes set up a cavalry regiment for King Gustav Adolf of Sweden , with which he fought on the Swedish side until 1636. In that year he became commander of the Hesse-Darmstadt troops in the imperial army. In 1641/42 he was supreme commander of the troops of his brother-in-law, Duke Georg von Braunschweig-Calenberg in the Allied army. After his death (on April 2, 1641 in Hildesheim ), he and his widow Anna Eleonore successfully campaigned for a mutual agreement with the emperor.

In 1639, Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt-Köthen accepted Johannes into the Fruit Bringing Society . He received the company name of the stately one and the motto give strength and strength . The large citron ( Citrus medica L. ) was given to him as an emblem . Johann's entry can be found in the Koethen Society Register under number 326.

In 1643, in a partition agreement with his brothers, Johannes was awarded the possessions of Eppstein , Katzenelnbogen and Braubach with the Marksburg .

In 1647 he married Johannette (Johanna) von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1632–1701), daughter of the Count of Sayn-Wittgenstein and Louise Juliane von Erbach . The marriage remained childless. At the age of 42, Johann von Hessen-Braubach died on April 1, 1651 in Ems. His widow married Duke Johann Georg I of Saxony-Eisenach in Wallau in 1661 .
