Johann Christian Herrgaß (born November 25, 1780 in Ziebingen , † October 19, 1850 in Magdeburg ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Johann Christian was the son of the Prussian NCO in the "Alt-Woldeck" infantry regiment Michael Herrgaß and his wife Marie, née Drechsler.

Military career

Herrgaß occurred on March 8, 1797, the musketeer in the infantry regiment "of Möllendorff" the Prussian army , and in 1804 became corporal. During the Fourth Coalition War he fought near Jena and was made inactive after the capitulation near Prenzlau. Nevertheless Herrgass took part in the battles near Frankenstein and Rotwaltersdorf. He was wounded in the defense of Glatz and served in 1807 as a non-commissioned officer in the Freikorps "Reichmeister".

After the war, he first joined the gendarmerie in 1808 and then became a sergeant in the Guard Regiment on April 1, 1809 . On April 1, 1813, he came to the 3rd Kurmärkische Landwehr Infantry Regiment as a second lieutenant with a patent from June 15, 1813. During the Wars of Liberation Herrgass acquired the Iron Cross II class in the Battle of Hagelberg . He was also at the sieges of Magdeburg and Wesel. Promoted to Prime Lieutenant on May 10, 1814 , he took part in the summer campaign in 1815 and fought at Ligny . At Waterloo Herrgaß was wounded by a shot in the arm and was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Order of St. Vladimir IV Class.

After the war he was aggregated to the Leib-Infanterie-Regiment on February 9, 1816 and transferred to the 27th Infantry Regiment as a company commander on August 12, 1816 . On March 30, 1832, he was promoted to major and appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion in the 29th Landwehr Infantry Regiment. On February 21, 1836 Herrgass was aggregated to the 27th Infantry Regiment and on July 10, 1838, transferred as a commander to the 4th Combined Reserve Battalion. In this position he rose to colonel by March 1845 . On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, Herrgaß received the notification on August 5, 1847 that he would be allowed to remain in command for another three years, and on February 26, 1847 he received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with a bow. Under awarding of the character as a major general, he took his on October 16, 1849 farewell with board . He died on October 19, 1850 in Magdeburg.

family

Herrgaß married Karoline Wilhelmine Pinckernell (1801–1849) in Magdeburg on November 23, 1826. The sons Johann Julius Theodor (* 1821) and Johann Heinrich Herrmann (* 1823) as well as the daughter Karoline Johanna Emma (* 1824) emerged from the marriage.
