Johann Conrad Arnoldi

Johann Conrad Arnoldi (born November 1, 1658 in Trarbach ; † May 22, 1735 in Gießen ) was a German pedagogue, logician, librarian and Lutheran theologian.

Life

Johann Conrad Arnoldi was the son of the rector at the grammar school and later pastor and senior of the ministry Johann Justus Arnoldi. He had initially attended high school in his hometown and in 1677 began studying philosophical sciences at the University of Giessen . Here he attended lectures in logic and metaphysics with Johann Daniel Arcularius, in ethics with Johann Weisse ( 1620–1683), rhetoric and history with Heinrich Phasian (1633–1697), mathematics with Balthasar Mentzer , physics with Lorenz Strauss ( 1633–1697) 1687) and the oriental languages ​​with David Clodius . These teachers had given him the tools so that in 1679 he was able to acquire the academic degree of master's degree in philosophy. Then he devoted himself to the study of theology, for which he attended the lectures of Johann Nikolaus Misler , Philipp Ludwig Hanneken and Kilian Rudrauf (1627–1690).

In 1680 he moved to the University of Strasbourg , where he found other teachers in Sebastian Schmidt , Isaak Faust (1631–1702), Balthasar Bebel and Ulrich Obrecht (1646–1701). In 1683 he went on an educational trip that took him to Durlach, Stuttgart and Tübingen. In Tübingen he attended the lectures of Johann Adam Osiander , Georg Henrich Häberlin (1644–1699) and Johann Ulrich Pregizer for six months . After a stopover at the University of Altdorf , he returned to his homeland and continued his travel ambitions from there. So he had gone to Saxony, had traveled to Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Speyer, Worms and in 1684 to France.

On February 19, 1685 he was appointed rector of the grammar school in Trarbach, and on February 10, 1708 he was appointed rector of the grammar school in Darmstadt , where, among other things, he revised the school regulations. On October 28, 1716 he became a full professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Giessen. Here he completed on December 9, 1717 the licentiate in theology and a doctorate on June 25, 1719 Doctor of theology. In 1725 he became the librarian of the Giessen University Library, in 1729 fourth full professor of theology and in 1733 a member of the spiritual consistory. Arnoldi also took part in the organizational tasks of the Giessen University. In 1732 he was dean of the theological faculty and in 1725 rector of the alma mater.

There are six sons and five daughters from his marriage. The sons Theodor Elias and Ernst Christoph Arnoldi are known .
