Joseph Daniel Böhm (born March 16, 1794 in Wallendorf in der Zips, † August 15, 1865 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor , medalist and director of the kk engraving academy in Vienna. He was the father of the sculptor Joseph Boehm .

Life

Joseph Daniel Böhm was born on March 16, 1794 in Wallendorf. In his youth he practiced drawing , modeling, raised and recessed cutting in wood, stone, marble and precious stone and in 1821, at the age of 17, went on a study trip to Florence and Rome to gain his knowledge with the sculptors Johann Martin Fischer and Franz Anton von Zauner to perfect. After a few years he returned to Germany and mastered the making of sculptures in Kelheimer Stein . From 1825 he turned exclusively and successfully to the art of medalists, so that in 1831 he was appointed imperial court medalist and then teacher and director of the imperial-royal coin engraving academy.

At the engraving academy, he knew how to instruct his students with great skill and how to make a large number of medals. In his work he always honestly endeavored to give his medals new, even higher value and shine with old, proven hand technology. His best works are classified according to subject groups: In sculpture : an ancient dancer, a lion-taming cupid, several statues of princes of the Austrian regent house; the portraits of Count Lützow , Count von Hohenwart , Cardinal Consalvi and more. In the art of die cutting: several award medals; the portraits of the court actor Koch, the Catalani , Lablache , the painter David; the commemorative coins on the inauguration of the Cathedral of Erlau , on Prince Paul Esterházy , on Archduke Karl Ludwig , on Count Colloredo-Mansfeld . As well as in the stone carving, a cameo with a portrait of Thorwald, one depicting the flight of Helen , as well as that of an ancient hero with a laurel wreath should be mentioned.

In addition to his oeuvre and his pedagogical skills, his extensive knowledge of art and its history, as well as his precious and rich art collection, should be emphasized. Joseph Daniel Böhm died on August 15, 1865 at the age of 71 in Vienna. One of his students, Franz Gaul , was appointed as his successor at the engraving academy .
