Carl Friedrich Arnold von Lützow , also Karl von Lützow (born December 23, 1832 in Göttingen , † April 22, 1897 in Vienna ) was a German art historian and university professor .

Live and act

Carl von Lützow, son of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin chamberlain and later castle captain and senior steward Carl von Lützow (1794–1868) in Schwerin, grew up in Schwerin and attended high school there. He belonged to the Mecklenburg branch of Goldenbow and Groß-Salitz of his family and not to their boehm-Österr. Part of his gender, although he spent much of his life in Vienna. In the winter semester of 1851/52 he matriculated in Göttingen and began to study classical philology and archeology. In 1851 he joined the Hannovera fraternity . In the summer semester of 1854 he moved to the University of Munich. There he made the acquaintance of Friedrich Bodenstedt and other poets, some of whom were invited to the round table of the Bavarian King Maximilian II. Together with his friend Karl Lemcke, he was one of the co-founders of the Munich group of poets " The Crocodiles " and was nicknamed "Biber". This artist association was influenced by Emanuel Geibel .

After completing his doctorate ( De vasis fictilibus more archaico pictis ) as Dr. phil. In 1856 he went to Berlin to study the archaeological collections there. Here he met Wilhelm Lübke and accompanied him on a study trip to Italy. Further trips took him to France and England, with the result that his interest turned more to art history. In 1858 he completed his habilitation in Munich with a thesis on the history of ornamentation on painted Greek clay pots and then became a private lecturer. In 1863 Karl von Lützow went to Vienna and was initially a private lecturer at the university . The following year he became a lecturer in art history at the Academy of Fine Arts . In addition, he was given the management of the library and the collection of engravings; then he was appointed to the board of the academy. In 1867 he was appointed associate professor and in 1882 full professor of art history at the Vienna University of Technology .

His friendship with the publisher Ernst Arthur Seemann in Leipzig meant that he agreed to take over the publication of the then only important German-language art journal Zeitschrift für Bildende Kunst with the supplement art chronicle from 1863 until his death . Further works by him have been published by EA Seemann . Karl von Lützow, who has written numerous art-historical treatises, was also happy to give lectures and publish on current events and current developments in architecture. His assessment of the Reichstag building in Berlin is still of particular interest today . He thought the dome was tasteless, the towers too clumsy, criticized the lack of architectural structure and development and criticized the sculptures. The accusation that it was a "failed creation" did not come from him, but received new impetus from his criticism.

Since the well-known art historian had made his home in the Austrian capital, the City of Vienna honored him by receiving grave of honor no.9 in the area of group 14A in the central cemetery .
