Johann Ernst Greverus (born October 24, 1807 in Oldenburg ; † May 19, 1871 in Eutin ) was a German administrative lawyer and, in 1871, briefly president of the government of the Principality of Lübeck , an exclave of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg .

Life

Greverus was born as the son of the auction manager Ernst Christoph Greverus (1750–1819) and Johanne Gesine Wilhelmine. von Harten (1765–1829) born. He attended high school in Oldenburg and studied law at the Universities of Göttingen and Heidelberg from 1826 to 1829 . After passing the entrance examination for the Oldenburg state service, he became an official administrator in Birkenfeld in 1831 and an assessor for the government of the Principality of Birkenfeld , which belonged as an exclave to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, in 1837 . Two years later he was appointed bailiff in Birkenfeld and in July 1846 transferred to Oldenburg with the same rank. After the outbreak of the revolution he was sent to Birkenfeld in April 1848 as the personal commissioner of Grand Duke August I with extensive powers to take over the administration of the principality in the event of serious unrest. However, his intervention proved unnecessary and he was able to return to Oldenburg after a short time. In May 1848 he became a member of the constitutional commission set up by the Grand Duke, which drafted a constitutional law that served as a basis for advice to the state parliament . As a member of the constituent state parliament , Greverus was involved in drawing up the constitution in 1848/49 . As a member of the commission set up by the government in 1851, he also worked on the revision of the constitution. In September 1853 he was appointed bailiff of Schwartau and promoted to senior bailiff in 1865. From 1860 to 1866 he was again a member of the Oldenburg Landtag . Shortly before his death, on March 26, 1871, he was appointed chairman of the government of the Principality of Lübeck with the title of government director (district president). On May 1, Greverus took over the office from his predecessor Anton Barnstedt , who retired. The principality was created in 1803 with the secularization of the Lübeck bishopric and belonged in personal union to the domain of the dukes / grand dukes of Oldenburg . It lay as an exclave on the northern border with the imperial city of Lübeck and expanded to the north. After his death, Carl Franz Nikolaus Bucholtz succeeded Greverus in office.

family

Greverus married Clara Theodore born on September 6, 1839. Fischer (1815–1899), daughter of the Birkenfeld District President Laurenz Hannibal Fischer (1784–1867). The marriage had two daughters and four sons.
