Johann Franck
Johann Franck also, Frank , (born June 1, jul. / 11. June 1618 greg. In Guben , † June 18 jul. / 28. June 1677 greg. ) Was a German jurist and poet known hymns , but also secular Poems .
Life
Johann Franck was the son of a lawyer who died in 1620. His uncle, the city judge Adam Tielckau, took care of him. After attending the Latin school in Guben, he attended the schools in Cottbus and Stettin as well as the grammar school in Thorn . From June 28, 1638 he studied law in Königsberg . There he was influenced by the poet of popular songs Simon Dach , to whose circle of friends and poets Kürbishütte he belonged. At his mother's request, he returned to Guben at Easter 1640, which at that time suffered badly from the Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War . After returning from a trip to Prague in May 1645, he worked as a lawyer. In 1648 he became a councilor and in 1661 mayor of Guben. Since 1671 he represented his hometown in the state parliament of Niederlausitz as the state elder .
Johann Franck created 110, mainly sacred songs, which were included in most of the Protestant German church hymn books (see: History of the sacred song on the European continent ). Most of his works have lost their importance; only two of his songs can be found in the Evangelical Hymnal. The current church hymn books in Sweden and Swedish-speaking Finland also contain at least 4 of his songs. His best songs include, for example, Schmücke dich, o dear soul (EG 218), Jesus, my joy (EG 396), you, o beautiful world building and others, some of which were also set to music by Johann Crüger . In his work he shows a relationship with Paul Gerhardt . His secular poems are mostly occasional poems, but also love poems and verses related to nature and home.
