Johann Gerdes (doctor)

Johann Gerdes (* around 1656 in Stockholm ; † January 6, 1700 in Greifswald ) was a German professor of medicine.

Life

Johann Gerdes was probably born the son of a German businessman. He attended the University of Wittenberg , where he a. a. heard from Georg Kaspar Kirchmaier and first obtained the philosophical master's degree and in 1681 also the medical doctorate. Gerdes went to Stettin and there married the daughter of the later tribunal assessor Koch.

In Rostock he received a professorship for medicine and higher mathematics in 1687. Governor General Nicolaus Bielke appointed him to a medical professorship in Greifswald in 1691 . He was the royal vice archiater and dean of the medical faculty.

After the death of his first wife, Gerdes married Anna Margareta von Schmiterlöw in 1697.

During his tenure, Gerdes had a Hortus Medicus ( lat. Medicinal Garden ) set up, gave lectures on anatomy and pathology and also dealt with mental illnesses. In 1699 he wrote an extensive account of the Gesundbrunnen in Kentz near Barth .
