Johann Heinrich Heidegger (born July 1, 1633 in Bäretswil in the Zurich Oberland ; † January 18, 1698 in Zurich ) was a Reformed theologian from Switzerland .

He became professor of the Hebrew language in Heidelberg , in 1659 professor of theology at the high school in Steinfurt and in Zurich in 1665 professor of morality and in 1667 professor of theology.

In 1661 he married Elisabeth von Duno, daughter of a Swiss businessman.

While Heidegger advocated unification between the Reformed Church and the Lutheran Church in 1686 , he argued violently against the Roman Catholic Church , for example in his writings De fide decretorum concilii Tridentini quaestiones and Anatome concilii Tridentini . He was an important representative of the reformed federal theology , participated in the drafting of the Consensus Helveticus and defended against Louis Cappel the verbal inspiration of the Hebrew Bible down to the vowel points .

The impresario Johann Jacob Heidegger was the younger of his two sons.
