Johann Heinrich Rolle (born December 23, 1716 in Quedlinburg , † December 29, 1785 in Magdeburg ) was a German composer and music teacher .

Life

Rolle was born as the son of the future cantor at the Magdeburg old town high school Christian Friedrich Rolle . The father took over the education of his musically gifted son. In 1722 the family moved to Magdeburg.

In 1734 Rolle received a position as organist at the Magdeburg Sankt-Petri-Kirche , which he held until 1737. Then Rolle went to Leipzig to study law. He then moved to Berlin, where he worked as a legal advisor for a short time. In 1741 he got a job in the Friedrich II chapel , first as a violinist , then as a violist . In 1746 he returned to Magdeburg as an organist in the Sankt-Johannis-Kirche . In 1752 he succeeded his father as cantor at the grammar school.

Rolle also took on the role of city music director. In this position he worked in the interests of the Enlightenment . He succeeded in making Magdeburg, as one of the first German cities without a residence, staging concerts from 1764 , which developed its national importance.

In 1758 Johann Heinrich Rolle married Rahel Christiana Jacobi, the daughter of a Hamburg merchant. The marriage had four children.

Rolle belonged to the so-called Wednesday Society founded by Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim . Here he maintained contact with Heinrich Rathmann , Friedrich von Koepcken , Johann Bernhard Basedow , Johann Samuel Patzke , Friedrich Gabriel Resewitz , Gottfried Benedict Funk and Gotthilf Sebastian Rötger .

His compositions are in the tradition of the Baroque , however, are already on the transition of the High Baroque towards the so-called gallant style of Rococo coined. Rolle left a multitude of works that are still played today. The texts for eight works are by Johann Samuel Patzke , and for four works the texts were written by August Hermann Niemeyer .
