In-Albon (family)

In-Albon , also Ab Albuna or In der Albun , is the family name of a Swiss " burger dynasty" from the hamlet of Albe near Visp , whose members held numerous political offices in the Zehnden Visp and in the Swiss state of Valais in the 16th and 17th centuries Canton of Valais , held.

Origin of the family

The political rise of the family began with the progenitor Peter In-Albon (approx. 1430–1505), the Grosskastlan of Visp, and his sons. His son, also named Peter († 1501), lived in Bramois for a few years and later returned to Visp, where his descendants formed the only Eggerberg line. Heinrich In-Albon (mentioned in the period 1490–1518) moved to Stalden and his descendants branched out to Visp, Brig-Glis and Turtmann . Simon In-Albon († before 1533) was the mayor and Grosskastlan of Visp.

Those who emerged from this line are the later three governors Simon, Johann and Heinrich as well as the vice governor of Valais (today: Canton Valais ) and opponent Kaspar von Stockalpers Adrian In-Albon († 1682) also came from Visp. Peter Ludwig In-Albon, on the other hand, came from Brig.

Simon In-Albon

Simon In-Albon (* 1492 in Visp; † 1540) also became a citizen of Sion in 1519 . He was the son of the large castlan Simon from Visp and his wife Margaretha ze Brunnen. He studied in Cologne from 1507 to 1511 for his Magister Artium and subsequently became a lecturer at the University of Cologne and from 1512 at the University of Basel . In 1512 he married Anna Sterren. In 1517 he became Visper Grosskastlan, and in 1518 governor of Valais. From 1524 to 1525 he was governor of Lower Valais . He had numerous contacts with humanists and took part in missions abroad. He was considered an opponent of Cardinal Matthäus Schiner . In the meantime he was also the custodian of the Valais Provincial Archives. Among his estates in Sion and Visp was the In-Albon house on the Visper castle hill.

Johann In-Albon

Johann In-Albon (* around 1535 in Stalden; † January 26, 1608 in Visp) became a citizen of Sion in 1587. He was the son of the Grosskastlan and Visper banner owner Peter In-Albon. He was later married, first to Evelyn Zentriegen, daughter of Bailiff Johannes Zentriegen, and later to Katharina Kalbermatter, widow of Swiss State Chancellor Martin Guntern . He studied in Paris around 1555 and then worked as a notary and publishing author. In 1562 he participated in the uprisings of the Protestants of Lyon , an oppressed minority in the entirely Catholic area. 1568, 1578, 1595 and 1607 was Johann Grosskastlan von Visp, then from 1573 to 1574 Landvogt von Monthey , from 1588 Grosskastlan von Bagnes and from 1574 to 1608 Colonel of the Morges district . He then became vice governor in 1569 and governor of Valais for six terms between 1575 and 1607. Heinrich In-Albon

Heinrich In-Arbon (* around 1601 probably in Visp; † June 22, 1666) was the son of Johann In-Albon and Katharina Kalbermatter. He studied at the University of Lucerne from 1613 and later from 1617 to 1618 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1622 he married Maria Zuber, the daughter of Sebastian Zuber. From 1622 onwards he was the Grand Kastlan of Visp several times, from 1629 to 1630 then Landvogt of Monthey and from 1646 to 1666 the banner lord of Visp. From 1659 to 1662 he served as governor and from 1663 to 1666 as sack master of the state of Valais. Heinrich was a knight of the Order of the Golden Spur and was wealthy from his father, especially in Visp.

Peter Ludwig In-Albon

Peter Ludwig In-Albon (born March 1, 1823 in Brig; † November 4, 1892 in Basel ) was the son of the notary and Grosskastlan von Brig, who also bore the name Johann In-Albon, and his wife Christina, née. Bürcher. He was married from 1850 to Johanna Fontaine, who came from Raron . He was an advocate and notary in the local council of Brig. He was also a reporter at the Ostlich-Raron and von Brig district courts . From 1865 to 1877 he was mortgage administrator for the Brig district and from 1852 to 1857 and from 1861 to 1892 he was vice-chairman of the Brig district He was also a member of the Great Council of Valais from 1876 to 1892, its German-speaking secretary, and from 1868 to 1871 the Council of States .
