About this picture
w

Stalden ( Valais German Schtaalu ) is a political municipality and civic community in the Visp district and a parish of the Visp deanery in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland . Due to the large number of bridges in a comparatively small area, it is also called "Das Brückendorf".

geography

The Saas Valley and the Mattertal meet at Stalden . Numerous bridges from different eras are evidence of the brisk traffic that was already prevalent in this region and are evidence that Stalden was an important hub for the transport of goods from an early age. The oldest bridge is the Chibrücke from 1544, which was built by the builder Ulrich Ruffiner . Today the valley road in the direction of Saas-Fee and Zermatt crosses the Vispa over the St. Michaels Bridge and the Illas Bridge.

Historical

Stalden was first mentioned in a document in 1213. The former hamlet or village was called Merjen / Merju. It can be assumed that the village of Stalden was already known as an important transit point at that time.

Stalden – Staldenried aerial cableway

Stalden is a hub and a regional center. The Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn , which operates the route from Visp to Zermatt , maintains the station. The Postbus provides the Stalden - Törbel - Z'Nivu (winter, in summer to Moosalp ) and Brig - Visp - Saas-Fee lines. A 2-sector aerial cable car leads up to Staldenried and on to the village of Gspon . Stalden is on the main road 212 Visp – Saas-Fee, the main road 213 Stalden – Täsch begins shortly after the Illas bridge. Both are maintained by the canton . To bypass the village until 2024 u. a. built the 270-meter-long Chinegga Bridge.

politics

The executive, the municipal council, consists of seven members.

economy

Few industrial companies are located in Stalden. This includes a sawmill, two joiner's shops, a steel processing factory and the two hydroelectric plants. The services are mainly limited to restaurants and hotels and small businesses. Even if the population has decreased in the course of the last few years, the economy of the municipality of Stalden is considered to be very well off.

education

The St. Michael School Center is the regional education center of Stalden and the surrounding area. It includes the orientation school for Stalden, Törbel , Staldenried , Eisten and Embd as well as a primary school and a kindergarten .
