Location of the municipality | |
Visperterminen ( Valais German pronunciation Tärbinu or [ 'tæːrbinu ]) is a municipality and a civic community of the district Visp and a parish of the deanery Visp in the Swiss canton of Valais . The Swiss mountain village at the entrance to the lower Vispertal became famous for its white wine Heida (a Savagnin ), which grows in one of the highest vineyards in Europe.
Infrastructure
The community has two primary schools, which also house the kindergarten and a community library. However , the young people attend the orientation school in Visp .
history
In the 19th century, the Valais was structurally weak and was far from industrialization in other parts of the country and in Europe outside Switzerland. In Visperterminen, as in many other Valais villages, there was great poverty. As a result, about a quarter of the village population emigrated to Argentina in the 1850s and founded the town of San Jerónimo Norte there . Some residents of San Jerónimo Norte still use the Visperterminer dialect today.
Around 1990, the “Tärberines” - that's what the inhabitants of Visperterminen call themselves - lived following the cycle of farm work from “ bottom to top ”, so depending on the season they were on the move between the valley floor and the high mountain pastures . The traces of this nomadic life can be found everywhere. The landscape is characterized by a multitude of paths and paths, and the infrastructure of the settlements reflects this way of life. For example, you can still find a chapel, a driel (grape press) and a distillery in every hamlet .

- Wines
- Visperterminen is best known for its highest vineyard north of the main Alpine ridge . Archaeological finds show that the Celts were already involved in viticulture there. The waters of Zermatt ( Matter Vispa ) and Saas-Almagell ( Saaser Vispa ) meet in the nearby Stalden to the common river Vispa . The first vines of the famous vineyard grow on its banks at 660 meters. In short terraces with high dry stone walls , the vineyard overcomes 500 meters of altitude in a very small space. The southern exposure of the slope in the driest area of Switzerland and the large stone surfaces of the walls make the "Rieben" a warming chamber until late autumn. Among other things, the following wines are produced from these vines: Dôle , Fendant , Johannisberg , Pinot noir and Riesling x Silvaner , but also rarities such as Heida , Himbertscha , Mennas and Planscher .
- St. Jodern Cellar Cooperative
- The St. Jodern Kellerei cooperative was founded in Visperterminen in 1979 with the aim of guaranteeing the high quality of the Vispertal wine . The now more than 500 members of the cooperative produce around 300,000 liters of wine annually, which the St. Jodern Cellar fills in over 400,000 bottles. Incidentally, St. Jodern or St. Theodul is the patron saint of the Visperterminen parish church of the Visp deanery.
