Baltschieder ( Valais German : Baltschieder ) is a political municipality and a civic community with a civic council in the Visp district in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .

The municipality of Baltschieder is on the right side of the Rotten (Rhône) in the center of the Upper Valais . It is a neighboring municipality to Visp . Baltschieder is the municipality in the Valais that experienced the greatest growth in the resident population at the end of the 20th century. The population of Baltschiedn doubled from 500 in 1981 to 1000 in 1997. This increase in population was accompanied by brisk construction activity, especially in the valley to the west. As of December 31, 2018, the village had 1,328 inhabitants.

The “inner village” is at the exit of the Baltschiedertal with the stream of the same name, which in 2000 brought much misfortune to the village. Parts of the municipality, in particular the Baltschiedertal, lie in the area of ​​the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn mountain region, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 .
