Johann Jakob Dorner the Elder

Johann Jakob Dorner the Elder (born July 18, 1741 in Ehrenstetten im Breisgau , † May 22, 1813 in Munich ) was a German painter , etcher and restorer . Johann Jakob Dorner the Younger is his son.

life and work

Dorner learned goldsmithing in 1752 and from 1753 painting under Franz Joseph Rösch in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1759 he was trained as a fresco artist by Joseph Bauer in Augsburg . From 1761 he is based in Munich and is in 1765 by Elector Max III. appointed court painter. 1766–69 he went on a study trip to the Netherlands . The return journey took him via Paris and Switzerland . In Munich he becomes the electoral gallery inspector and works as a drawing teacher. In 1799 he retired from civil service.

Like Ferdinand Kobell, Dorner is one of the artists at the Munich court who intensively revisited the art of small masters of the Netherlands of the 17th century - such as Gerrit Dou , Frans van Mieris and Godfried Schalken . His landscapes, genre scenes and portraits intensely stimulated the next generation.

Larger holdings of his works can be found in the German Baroque Gallery in Augsburg, the Bavarian State Painting Collections and the State Graphic Collection in Munich .
