Johann Jakob Faesch
Johann Jakob Faesch (born March 24, 1752 , different date March 26, 1752 in Basel , † August 17, 1832 there ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman.
Life
Johann Jakob Faesch was the son of town major Johann Rudolf Faesch († November 11, 1781 in Basel) and his wife Anna Margarethe (née Hagenbach) (1730–1786). He attended high school in Basel from 1760 (today: Gymnasium am Münsterplatz ) and began studying philosophy in Basel in 1766, which he completed in 1770 with a study of theology at the University of Basel , the University of Lausanne and the University of Geneva , among others with David Claparède , continued. After completing his studies, he became a theology candidate in 1774 and from 1774 to 1776 was tutor to the later mayor of Basel , Peter Burckhardt .
From 1776 to 1777 he was chaplain in French service in Colonel d'Aubonne's regiment in the fortress in Avesnes ; During the trip there he met the writer Gottlieb Konrad Pfeffel in Colmar . From 1777 to 1793 he was pastor in Gelterkinden and from 1791 to 1793 dean of the Farnsburg chapter, then until 1802 helper and then until 1832 pastor at the Theodorskirche in Basel.
On June 15, 1803, he first chaired the marriage court . In 1816 he became a member of the University Commission and in 1818 a member of the Basel Education Council.
He lectured in homiletics and catechetics at the University of Basel from 1819 to 1822 .
Johann Jakob Faesch was married to Maria Catharina (née Schnell) (1757–1814) since 1778. They had four children together. He was the maternal grandfather of the merchant and banker Johann Jakob Speiser .
Theological work
Theologically he was committed to the Enlightenment and took an active part in the Helvetic Revolution . He published some of his sermons and dealt with oriental languages . He was friends with the theology professor Johann Friedrich Miville (1754-1820) and the theologian Johannes Frey .
