Johann Linder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Linder (* 1896 in Tablat , Canton of St. Gallen ; † October 18, 1972 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss waiter and globetrotter who became a legendary St. Gallen city original as a carnival and schnitzel shopper in the 1950s .

Life

The Johann-Linder-Brunnen by Max Oertli in Linsebühl, St. Gallen

Little is known about Linder's parents, childhood and youth. Born in nearby Tablat, he grew up in the St. Gallen district of Linsebühl. His childhood was difficult and he was not a good student. He broke off an apprenticeship he had started after just four weeks. Linder took odd jobs in the hotel business and worked for many years as a waiter and barman abroad, including in England and Ireland . In November 1931 he traveled with the steamer Ansonia via Genoa to Egypt to work as a "hotel employee" in Alexandria . There he spent a total of fifteen winter seasons. After numerous work stays abroad, but also in Swiss cities such as Lausanne , Zermatt , Montreux and St. Moritz , where he came into contact with the world of the rich and beautiful, he returned to St. Gallen in 1942 to stay in his hometown forever to stay. In one of his most famous chansons he later sang: "s Heichoo uf Sanggale isch noch s Schönscht!" ( Written German : "Coming home to St. Gallen is the most beautiful thing!" )

Linder found a job as a waiter in the well-known St. Gallen Café Seeger on Oberen Graben. From 1951 to 1961 he performed almost every day in the Seeger-Bar during the carnival season with his program Boat dö Nüij (St. Gallen French for Boîte de nuit , German night club ) as a one-man cabaret . In the tradition of the banter , he gave the St. Gallen Carnival a new impetus as a popular and sought-after Schnitzelbänkler well known in the city and refuted the reputation of the St. Gallen people that they had no sense of humor. In his couplets , sung in St. Gallen German , he made fun of the events of the past year - mostly accompanied by instruments. Sitting on the grand piano , while singing and telling stories in a sometimes fragile voice, he would sing and tell amiably and yet viciously about the distinguished society, authorities and authorities.

The large-format illustrations belonging to his texts, which were presented as display boards on a helgen , were made for him by his friend, the St. Gallen painter Willi Koch (1909–1988). Linder's texts were published in book form between 1956 and 1959 under the title Seegers Boat dö nüjh: [Schnitzelbänke] . Recordings of his performances are available for posterity on several vinyl long-playing records , the covers of which were also designed by Willi Koch, and on a music CD released in 2003 .

In the traditional Swiss humor and satirical magazine Nebelspalter , "the Johann", as Linder was called by the St. Gallers, was described as follows:

"Skinny, bespectacled, a St. Gallen face without any boldness until, yes, until the embroidered grandfather's cap sits underneath, an orange tie underneath and the brightly colored highlights glimmer in it or the shadows of the clouds pass over it with a gentle melancholy."

In 1961, at the age of 65, Linder became eligible for AHV and retired. On the occasion of his last performance he was given a rich gift of flowers, speeches were given, and the town music played the Johann-Linder-Marsch , composed especially for him , which was published a year later on the long-playing record The True Johann . In the period that followed, it became quiet about Linder. One saw him wandering through the old town alleys on workdays, lost in thought, and on Sundays he was driving the bus back and forth across the city.

Johann Linder died impoverished in St. Gallen on October 18, 1972 at the age of 77.

Commemoration

In 1993 , the St. Gallen sculptor Max Oertli designed the Johann-Linder-Brunnen , which was set up in the middle Linsebühlstrasse , in memory of the carnivalists . It consists of a simple rectangular concrete basin and a life-size bronze figure of Johann Linder, who leans over the edge of the fountain basin and pours water from several vessels. As a special feature, mulled wine and punch flow from this fountain on one day instead of water during Carnival time .

The St. Gallen city archive keeps Linder's Schnitzelbank texts, the drawings by Willi Koch and the music notes for the Johann Linder March .
