Johann Martin Schirmer

Johann Martin Schirmer (born September 3, 1777 in St. Gallen ; † September 7, 1842 in Herisau ; resident in St. Gallen) was a Swiss businessman , entrepreneur and farmer from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johannes Martin Schirmer was a son of Johann Martin Schirmer, owner of an India printing house in St. Gallen, and Elisabeth Mittelholzer. He was the stepson of Matthias Schiess . In 1801 he married Katharina Barbara Hörler, daughter of Adam Hörler. In 1809 he entered into a second marriage with Anna Zellweger, daughter of Johann Caspar Zellweger . After the father's death in 1778, the family moved to Herisau. His mother worked there in the embroidery manufacture and in the embroidery trade. Schirmer was initially a mousseline merchant in Herisau. Later he retired to his estate, where he tried out new methods in meadow culture, fruit growing and cattle breeding . From 1808 he owned the Alp Klein-Gerstengschwend . As part of his extensive historical and geographical research on Ausserrhoder agriculture and alpine farming , Schirmer had Johann Ulrich Fitzi draw all of the canton's Alps . He belonged to the Society for the Advancement of Arts , Crafts and Agriculture of the Canton of St. Gallens . From 1832 he was an honorary member of the Appenzell non-profit society . As a grenadier captain , Schirmer built a parade house in Herisau.
