Johann Matthias Carrich

Johann Matthias Carrich (also Johann Mathias Carrich ; born February 23, 1735 in Ehrenbreitstein ; † October 21, 1813 in Cologne ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian , Jesuit and university teacher .

Life

Carrich received his first education at the Jesuit College in Koblenz . On May 27, 1755, he was accepted into the Jesuit community after having proven his knowledge of theology. He then worked for the Jesuits in Trier and Ravenstein . In Ravenstein he taught the humaniora . On September 14, 1760, he was ordained a priest in Cologne .

After his ordination, Carrich was sent to the Jesuit College in Münster . During this time the institution was included in the transformation into a Jesuit university. After the Jesuit order was abolished , this institution became the University of Münster . There he received the professorship for logic and metaphysics. In 1762 he was appointed professor of Hebrew at the University of Paderborn . When the teaching was moved to Büren , he taught Hebrew, Holy Scriptures and dogmatics there for six years.

In 1769 Carrich received a call to the University of Cologne , where he taught dogmatics, morals and church history, and was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD . He also taught Hebrew at the Jesuit College in Cologne. After the abolition of the Jesuit order in 1773 he kept his teaching post. In 1780 he was elected for the rain of the Marcell high school in Cologne . He held this office until 1798. He was also rector of the university from 1788 to 1793 .

In 1784 Carrich was appointed canon at the St. Gereon Abbey in Cologne. He was a prominent opponent of the direction of the University of Bonn .
