Johann Nepomuk Bestlin

Johann Nepomuk Bestlin (born February 28, 1768 in Ellwangen , † July 14, 1831 in Lauchheim ) was a German Catholic clergyman and theologian . As rector of the Catholic theological university, Bestlin unsuccessfully spoke out in favor of maintaining the Ellwangen location and renounced a professorship for moral and pastoral theology at the new Catholic theological faculty in Tübingen. Instead, he took up a pastor's post in Lauchheim.

Life

Johann Nepomuk Bestlin attended the Jesuit-run grammar school in Ellwangen . From 1788 he studied at the University of Dillingen . There he was a student of Johann Michael Sailer , who belonged to the so-called new school. On November 20, 1790 he was ordained a priest in Dillingen on the Danube . He was a papal alumnus . Bestlin celebrated the first event in Ellwangen. In 1791 he became vicar to the pastor Anton Stornbacher in Jagstzell and on July 4, 1801 chaplain in the priestly house of the Schönenbergkirche . The font tells about Jagstzell, Maria Anna Linderin, the good schoolmaster’s daughter . On May 31, 1805 he became pastor in Röhlingen . To pay homage to Elector Friedrich in 1803, Bestlin wrote a rural flute greeting , a song for the miners in Wasseralfingen and a cantata for the fire workers in Abtsgmünd and Unterkochen. From 1810 to 1812 Johann Baptist Hirscher was his vicar in Röhlingen.

In 1812 he became vicariate general and at the same time professor for moral and pastoral theology at the Friedrichsuniversität Ellwangen , where he was also rector for the years 1815/16 and 1816/17 . In 1816 he gave the Latin funeral speech for King Friedrich. As early as autumn 1817 the institution was to be merged with the University of Tübingen and both the vicariate general and the seminary were to be relocated to Rottenburg . After trying in vain to keep Ellwangen university, he could not make up his mind to move to Tübingen . He resigned his professorship, which Johann Baptist Hirscher received, and retired to his parish in Röhlingen. He became director of the Episcopal Commissariat Ellwangen, which was formed in 1817 with the relocation of the Vicariate General to Rottenburg and dissolved again in 1819 . On June 26, 1818 he became the parish priest of Lauchheim. Bestlin died on July 14, 1831 at the age of 63. He bequeathed his library to the district of Ellwangen.

Bestlin was known in his time for sermons in history. They either contained biblical events or the life stories of saints, or he incorporated anecdotes in the manner of Christoph von Schmid . He also wrote sayings and tried his hand at writing poems and songs ( work song for Christians , psalm, when there is quarrel and quarrel in the house , fighting passion , resolution , persevering patience ).
