Johann Nepomuk Graf von Klebelsberg, Freiherr zu Thumburg (born January 30, 1772 in Szoboszlo - June 1, 1841 in Theresienstadt ) was an Austrian general of the cavalry and knight of the Maria Theresa Order .

Life

He was the son of Major General Prokop Sigismund Graf von Klebelsberg (died January 17, 1819) from his marriage to Countess Maria Josepha Ugarte . He joined the Modena Dragoon Regiment as a cadet around 1788, where he was promoted to lieutenant . In 1789 he became a first lieutenant and in 1793 he joined the newly established Wurmser Hussar Freikorps as Rittmeister . He proved himself in the defense of a position near Killstädt and in 1794 in the battle of Rheingönheim . In July 1797 he was promoted to major and transferred to the Liechtenstein Hussars. He was present at the siege of Kehl and was wounded during the battle of Stockach . In 1805 he was promoted to colonel , served with Archduke Karl-Uhlanen and fought at the head of this cavalry in the Battle of Caldiero .

In the campaign of 1809 his cavalry first distinguished itself in the battle of Landshut . In the Battle of Wagram and the Battle of Hollabrunn (July 10th) he commanded a cavalry brigade within the 5th Corps. While Feldzeugmeister Fürst Reuss's infantry withdrew in the direction of Znaim , his brigade covered the retreat to Jetzelsdorf through targeted attacks at Schöngrabern , while to the right of it he maintained the connection with the FML von Schusteck troops returning from Krems via Maissau . With the army order of October 24, 1809, he received the rank of major general for his services and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order.

In the campaign of 1813 he was promoted to field marshal lieutenant and commanded the 2nd heavy cavalry division in the cuirassier corps of Count von Nostitz-Rieneck . He fought in the Battle of Dresden and the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig (October 1813). His cavalry pursued the French in the column of FML Bubna and was among the first allied troops to cross the Rhine. He then operated on the right bank of the Rhone and occupied the Jura . In the campaign of 1814 he pursued General Marchand's French troops as far as Rumilly and occupied Chambery on March 29, 1814 .

In the 1815 campaign he commanded a division of light troops in the 2nd Army Corps under the Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen . It enclosed Strasbourg and secured the space between the Rhine and the village of Fegersheim. After the wars of freedom were over , he was appointed owner of the Uhlanen Regiment No. 4 in 1815. In December 1831 he was appointed general of the cavalry and at the same time appointed commanding general in Moravia and Silesia . At the end of his military career he was still the governor of the Theresienstadt Fortress, where he died in 1841.

On May 19, 1806, Count Klebelsberg married Anna Countess Pejacsevic (born on July 9, 1785), who on March 13, 1809 gave him their son, Count Wenzeslaus, who was promoted to colonel and treasurer of Archduke Ferdinand of Este .
