John Michael Speckter (also: Johann Michael Speckter, * 5. July 1764 in Uthlede , † 1. March 1845 in Hamburg ) was a German lithographer and a major graphics - collectors .

Life

Speckter was the son of a teacher from Hanover . He moved to Hamburg around 1785. Under the influence of the architect Ernst Georg Sonnin , he initially worked towards studying architecture, but then studied mathematics at the Academic Gymnasium . In the 1790s he turned to a commercial activity, but was also active as a collector and dealer of engravings and etchings .

In 1818 he brought the still new technique of lithography to Northern Germany. He gave up his trading business and together with Heinrich Joachim Herterich (1772–1852), who brought the specialist knowledge and assistants from Munich with him, founded the first lithographic establishment in Northern Germany , the Hamb company . Steindruckerei Speckter & Herterich , 1829 then Speckter & Co . The company soon became very successful. Among other things, Gröger & Aldenrath ( Friedrich Carl Gröger and Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath ) had their portrait lithographs printed here.

The lithographic establishment was taken over by his son Otto Speckter in 1834 . He and his brother Erwin became known as painters and lithographers.

Johannes Michael Speckter's important collection of copperplate engravings formed the basis for the collection of prints at the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

In the area of ​​the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery of the Ohlsdorf Cemetery , graphic artist (with painter ), among others, commemorates Johannes Michael Speckter on the double collective grave .
