Johann Theodor Roemhildt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Theodor Roemhildt (born September 23 . Jul / 3. October  1684 greg. In Salzungen ; † 26. October 1756 in Merseburg ) was a German composer of the Baroque and Kantor .

Life

Johann Theodor was the son of the parish substitute Johann Elias Roemhildt and Johanna Elisabetha, daughter of pastor G. Christian Silchmüller from Gumpelstadt. He probably received his first music lessons from his father, later from Johann Jacob Bach in Ruhla . At the age of 13 Roemhildt came to the Thomasschule in Leipzig , where he learned from Johann Schelle and Johann Kuhnau . Classmates of his were u. a. Reinhard Keizer , Johann David Heinichen , Johann Christoph Graupner and Johann Friedrich Fasch , with whom he was still in contact later. In 1705 Roemhildt moved to the University of Leipzig and after only six semesters took up his first position as a music teacher and choir director in Spremberg in Lower Lusatia. In 1714 he was given the rector's office of the local school, not for pedagogical reasons, but because the rector's position had to be handed over to the cantor.

In 1715 he went to the church in Freystadt / Lower Silesia as music director . In addition to his position as cantor, Roemhildt worked as a teacher at the Lyceum , a school with around 150 students at the time. Two years later he turned down an appointment to Luckau and stayed in Freystadt until 1726; in the same year he moved back to Spremberg at the invitation of Duke Heinrich . When Duke Moritz Wilhelm , the so-called "Violin Duke " of Merseburg died in 1731, Heinrich became his successor. This took Roemhildt with him to the Merseburg court and appointed him court Kapellmeister . After the death of the cathedral organist Georg Friedrich Kauffmann in 1735 Roemhildt took over his function. At that time, the cathedral and city cantor was August Friedrich Graun, the older of the Graun brothers.

The time in Merseburg was obviously Roemhildt's most productive, the music historian Karl Theodor Paulke suspected that around 200 vocal works and the organ pieces were composed here. Roemhildt worked for 25 years as cathedral organist and titular court music director (the office itself was abolished shortly after Duke Heinrich's death in 1738) in that city, and it seems that he held the office until his death. However, in the last years of his life he was often represented by a certain Johann Elias Seydel, who later applied to succeed Roemhildt. The following entry can be found in the Merseburg church book of 1756 about the death of Johann Theodor Roemhildt :

"October 26th. Half past six o'clock is Mr. Johann Theodor Roemhildt, former Hochfuerstl. Saechs. Merseburg, well-appointed Capell Meister, as well as the organist who was here at the Hohen Stiffts und Dom church, died gently and blissfully at one stroke of the river in the 73rd year of his life and was buried in the city of God's field. "
