Johann Veldener

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Veldener (* in Würzburg ; † in Löwen between 1486 and 1496 , also known as Jan Veldener or Johan Veldenaer ) was an early book printer in Flanders .

Career

He worked as a stamp cutter and printer in Cologne together with William Caxton , who may have financed his first books. They both moved to Flanders in 1472. Caxton set up his own print shop in Bruges . There he printed, with Veldener's support, The Recuyell of the Historyes of Troy by Raoul Lefèvre in 1472/73 . Then Veldener went to Leuven and built his workshop there. He became the second printer in Leuven after Johann von Westphalen and the third or fourth in the Netherlands. On July 30, 1473 he was accepted into the medical faculty of the University of Leuven . In Leuven he printed the universal story Fasciculus temporum by Werner Rolevinck . The print was equipped with 15 woodcuts and the Veldeners signet.

He left Leuven in 1477 after the death of Charles the Bold caused unrest in the city and went to Utrecht . In 1480 he printed the Fasciculus temporum translated into Dutch . The other of his Utrecht printed works were religious writings. When things got restless in this city too, he moved to Culemborg in 1482 and returned to Leuven in 1484.

Veldener was also known for creating fonts . Caxton is said to have taken some of Veldener's fonts to England and used them, among other things, for the first edition of the Canterbury Tales . He may have bought more fonts from Veldener later.

In Utrecht, Veldener supposedly printed the Chronyck van Hollandt, Zeelandt, ende Westvrieslandt , a chronicle about Holland , Zeeland and West Friesland . It was reprinted in Utrecht in 1650. Other works attributed to him are the Cronijcken van Enghelant on the English kings until 1460, the Cronijcken van Utrecht on the bishops of Utrecht , the Cronijcken van Gelre , the Cronijcken van Cleve and the Cronijcken van Brabant . It is assumed that these are anonymous works printed by him and that later attributions to him as the author are incorrect.
