Johann Weikhard Prince of Auersperg (also Johann Weichard von Auersperg ; born March 11, 1615 at Seisenberg Castle ; † November 11, 1677 in Laibach ) was an Austrian minister , the first Prince of Auersperg , Prince of Tengen and Duke of Münsterberg .

Life

Seisenberg Castle

He came from the older line of the Auersperg family, who lived in Carniola . His parents were Theodor (Dietrich) von Auersperg and Sidonia Gall von Gallenstein.

From 1640 Johann Weikhard held several positions in the government and was chief steward and tutor to the Roman-German King Ferdinand IV. In 1653 he was appointed by Emperor Ferdinand III. raised to the imperial prince status, which in 1654 enfeoffed him in his capacity as King of Bohemia with the Silesian Duchy of Münsterberg and the city of Frankenstein . He subsequently dubbed the Duke of Münsterberg . He exercised great political influence in the first decade of the reign of Emperor Leopold I in 1653. On January 19, 1668, he was the first minister to conclude the secret treaty with France on the division of the Spanish monarchy and worked on a Catholic triple alliance between Austria , France and Spain . Since he was suspected of having conducted secret negotiations with the French King Louis XIV , who is said to have promised him cardinal dignity in return, he was unexpectedly dismissed on December 10, 1669 and banished from the court. The death sentence passed on him was not carried out. He then lived on his Krainer estates, where in 1673 he inherited the dominions of Gottschee and Seisenberg from his brother Wolf Engelbrecht Count Auersperg .

Johann Weikhard was married to Maria Katharina (1635–1691) von Losenstein . The marriage had three sons and five daughters. The older sons Johann Ferdinand von Auersperg (1655–1705) and Franz Karl von Auersperg (1660–1713) followed him as dukes of Münsterberg.
