Johann von Briedel

Johann von Briedel (* 1521 in Briedel ; † June 25, 1571 in Himmerod ) was a German abbot and vicar general .

Life

As a young man, Johann von Briedel was drawn to the Cistercian abbey of the Himmerod monastery in the Eifel . From 1552 to 1558 he worked initially as cellarius of the monastery. After Abbot Matthias Morsch from Ediger died on September 19, 1558, Johann von Briedel was chaired by Abbots Daniel von Eberbach and Heinrich III. Schiffer OSB from St. Matthias in Trier elected as the new abbot. The blessing he received through the Trier Bishop Gregory of Virneburg.

Due to his efforts as a very educated humanist and lover of science who was always looking for a lively exchange with other scholars , Johann von Briedel was soon regarded as the mouth of the clergy, also thanks to his special eloquence . Several sermons before the Archbishop of Trier and Elector Johann VI. von der Leyen brought the abbot special attention and respect, so that he visited him several times in the monastery of Himmerod. Thanks to Briedel and his successor Gregor Simonis, the Himmerod monastery achieved spiritual prosperity.

Abbot Johann, who supported artists and scholars through his patronage , also promoted talented young people by helping them to study in the monastery. He promoted u. a. the Himmeroder monastery shepherd and later auxiliary bishop Peter Binsfeld , as well as the humanist and poet Mathias Agritius (1545–1613) from Wittlich .

In 1563 he was the abbot of the monastery Citeaux Louis de Baissey the Visitation of both sexes in the archdioceses of Mainz and Trier transmitted. In 1565 the General Chapter appointed him Vicar General and Visitator of the Lower Rhine Order Province, to which the Electorates of Mainz, Trier, Cologne , as well as the Lords of Kleve , Geldern and their neighboring areas belonged. After a troubled phase in the monastery Heisterbach , he installed the Celleraren abbot Johann Vitensis (of St. Vith) there to restore the discipline of the order.

Johann von Briedel died at the age of 50 on June 25, 1571 in Himmerod and was buried in the chapter house . His death, as the epitaph praises him , was seen as a great loss.
