Johannes Adam (biologist)

Johannes Adam (born September 22, 1923 in Nossen ) is a German biostatistician and former university professor . He was from 1942 to 1945 security guard in the Auschwitz concentration camp and later in the Democratic German Republic (GDR) Professor with the Department of Medical Statistics at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg and 1978-1982 chairman of the Society of physical and mathematical biology at of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Life

Adam graduated from high school in Nossen in 1942 and then joined the Schutzstaffel (SS). As a security guard with the rank of Rottenführer he worked in the Auschwitz concentration camp, primarily in the Monowitz subcamp . Forced laborers who were forced to work for the chemical company IG Farben were interned here.

After the end of World War II Adam remained unmolested and studied from 1947 until completion of the diploma in 1952 mathematics at the Technische Hochschule (TH) Dresden and the University of Leipzig . From 1952 to 1955 Adam was a lecturer at the workers 'and farmers' faculty in Dresden and from 1955 to 1959 at the industrial institute of the TH Dresden.

From 1959 Adam worked at the chair for social hygiene at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg. In 1960 Adam received his doctorate with the thesis "Probability calculation and statistics as material in mathematics lessons in the general polytechnic secondary school, especially the extended secondary school" at the Potsdam University of Education , and in 1965 with the thesis "The methods of medical statistics as an aid to root cause research in social hygiene" habilitation from Martin Luther University Halle .

There he became a lecturer from 1965 and in 1968 received a professorship with a teaching position for medical statistics and physical and mathematical biology. From 1970 to 1989 Adam was professor with a chair for medical statistics and data processing and from 1982 director of the institute for biostatistics and computer science at the University of Halle.

His field of work included medical biometrics , statistics, computer science, sociology and epidemiology .

From 1972 to 1978 Adam was director of research in the medicine department at the University of Halle. From 1978 to 1982 Adam was also chairman of the Society for Physical and Mathematical Biology in the GDR . In 1975 and 1976 Adam was visiting professor at the University of Baghdad . In 1988 he ended his university career.

In 2013, the Halle (Saale) public prosecutor's office investigated him on suspicion of multiple complicity in murder during his time as a concentration camp guard. However, the proceedings were discontinued because the 90-year-old Adam was unable to be questioned or tried because of a serious illness .
