Johannes Franz Hartmann (born January 11, 1865 in Erfurt , † September 13, 1936 in Göttingen ) was a German astronomer .

Life

Hartmann studied in Tübingen , Berlin and Leipzig . During his studies he became a member of the Catholic student association AV Guestfalia Tübingen in the CV . In 1891 he received his doctorate and in 1893 went to the private observatory of Moritz von Kuffner , where he worked as an assistant.

In 1894 he returned to Leipzig and from 1896 worked at the Astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam . In 1902 Hartmann was appointed professor there . From 1909 to 1921 he worked as a full professor at the University of Göttingen and director of the observatory in Göttingen . In 1910 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina and in 1914 a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1921 he changed to the director of the Argentine National Observatory in La Plata , Argentina because of the better observation conditions . Seriously ill, he returned to Göttingen in 1934, where he died two years later.

Hartmann mainly dealt with star spectroscopy . While observing the binary star Delta Orionis , he found the first indications of interstellar matter . During his activities in Argentina he discovered the three asteroids (965) Angelica , (1029) La Plata and (1254) Erfordia .

The lunar crater Hartmann is named after him.
