John Janota

Johannes Janota (born May 30, 1938 in Brno ) is a German Germanic Medievalist . From 1983 to 2003 he was full professor for German language and literature of the Middle Ages at the University of Augsburg .

Life

Johannes Janota grew up in Schwäbisch Gmünd and Düsseldorf . After an apprenticeship as a toolmaker, attended high school and high school, then as a volunteer at a daily newspaper ( Südwestpresse ). From 1961 to 1966 as a scholarship holder of the Cusanuswerk, studied German Philology , Catholic Theology , Philosophy and History at the Universities of Tübingen and Vienna . 1966 PhD with a dissertation on the German sacred song of the Middle Ages in Tübingen. Then until 1974 scientific assistant to Hanns Fischer and his successor Burghart Wachinger there . 1973 Habilitation with a research report on the German literature of the late Middle Ages there. Venia Legendi for German Philology . From 1974 to 1983 professor at the newly founded University of Siegen , development of medieval German studies there. In the 2007/08 academic year Wolfgang Stammler - visiting professor for Germanic Philology at the University of Friborg ( Switzerland ). Since 2003 Prof. i. R.

Focus in research and teaching

His research focus is on German literature of the late Middle Ages. Within this area he mainly deals with poetry and drama. Another center is the literary history of the late Middle Ages. Technical history is still one of the areas of interest. His method is based on text philosophy, his questions are aimed at the cultural and social environment of literature, its forms of organization and tradition. The results of his research are available in studies and editions, many of which have been funded by the German Research Foundation.

Janota was co-editor of the following magazines: Germanisch Romanische monthly: NF (1980-2004), communications of the German Association of Germanists (1987-1991), German studies. International organ of presentations with bibliographical references (1987-2013) and Studia Augusta. Augsburg research on European cultural history (1991-2008). He is a co-founder of the Augsburg Institute for European Cultural History . From 1987 to 1991 he was chairman of the German Association of Germanists .
