Johannes Jonsius

Johannes Jonsius or Jonsenius (actually Johannes Jöns ; born October 20, 1624 in Rendsburg ; † April 1659 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German educator and historian of philosophy .

Life

Jonsius was born as the son of the mayor of Rendsburg . He first attended the school in Rendsburg and from 1641 the Kiel school of scholars . After completing this, he moved to the University of Rostock . Here he was with the number 172 in October 1645 enrolled . He devoted himself to studying philology , philosophy and theology . In 1648 he became an adjunct in the philosophy faculty of the university. There followed a period of frequent job changes.

In 1649 Jonsius became vice principal of the school in his hometown, but in 1650 accepted a position as an assessor at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Königsberg due to the better salary . Although he had the prospect of a professorship there , in 1652 he accepted the election as rector of the school in his hometown and returned there. In 1656 he went to the cathedral school Schleswig as rector , where he should have better teaching conditions. However, he couldn't cope with the climate. Already at this time he began to have problems with his health. In 1657 he moved to Frankfurt am Main via Leipzig . There he became prorector of the Frankfurt grammar school . However, his health deteriorated and he died after not even two years in office.

His main work is the history of philosophy De Scriptoribus Historiae Philosophicae , which appeared in the year of his death and which brought him posthumously notoriety.
