Johannes Kersthold

Johannes Kersthold (born November 16, 1965 in Trier , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German jazz pianist , soloist, composer and producer.

Life

Kersthold studied jazz piano with Walter Norris and Aki Takase at the Berlin University of the Arts , as well as classical piano with Elzbieta Sternlicht. He also learned from Harold McKinney in 1985 at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. Still living in Trier, he had piano lessons with Hermann Becker, Géza Losó and Georg Ruby . He gained a wide range of musical experiences in workshops with John Taylor , Richie Beirach and David Liebman . He worked together with Tony Lakatos , John Tchicai , Christof Griese , Christiankap and Jiggs Whigham , Joachim Schönecker and Gilbert Diop.

In 1982 Kersthold founded the jazz rock formation Springform with Joachim Schönecker . In 1987 he moved to Berlin . There he played in the city's club scene with local jazz greats. He participated in productions for the Theater des Westens , the winter garden , the tribune , the chameleon . In 1996 he was a prize winner at the musica vitale competition with the German-Chinese group Omen. In 2000 he won first prize in the Lotte Lenya singing competition of the Kurt Weill Foundation New York with the singer Anette Postel. In 2003 he founded his own label anjoke . In 2004 he was the winner of the Jazz Awards in Berlin with the Hattie St. John Quartet. In 2005 he took 1st place with the Griese / cap quintet at the Berlin Jazz & Blues Award . He can also be heard with the singer Jule Unterpann . In 2003 he founded the label anjoke. Since then he has been using this platform for CD productions and the production of electronic tracks. In addition to music, he also turned to painting. He lives as a freelance artist in Parstein , Brandenburg.
