Johannes Riemer (born February 11, 1648 in Halle (Saale) ; † September 9, 1714 in Hamburg ) was a German writer and theologian of the Baroque period. His pseudonyms are: Clemens Ephorus Albilithanus, Johann Christlieb, Bellarminus Coccyx, Galanisantrus, Erasmus Grillandus, Michael Kautzsch, and Philogamus from Paphos.

Life

Riemer attended grammar school in his hometown Halle and then enrolled in Jena , where he studied rhetoric and theology . Originally, he intended to embark on an academic career, and around 1672 he chaired several academic disputations. In 1673 he was appointed to the chair of eloquence and poetry at the academic high school in Weißenfels as the successor to Christian Weise .

Here he published numerous writings, which not infrequently showed his fellow citizens in small towns in a critical light. Particularly with regard to the no less time-critical novelist Johann Beer , certain tensions seem to have existed. Beer's partially misogynous writings were criticized several times by Riemer. When Beer later published his “ anti-feminist ” novel The Political Fire Mower , an anonymous reply was published in 1682 under the title The turned-out political fire mower , which is today - probably not without good reason - attributed to Riemer.

Apparently the Weißenfelser small town quarrels contributed to Riemer's decision in 1687 to accept a pastor's position in Osterwieck . In 1691 he went on to Hildesheim as superintendent , which office he held until in 1704 he was appointed senior pastor at the Jacobikirche in Hamburg - an office previously held by the eloquent Johann Balthasar Schupp . He stayed here until his death in 1714.
