Life

Born as the son of the personal physician of the Queen of England in Edinburgh, Martin Schöner, and his wife Lucretia, the daughter of Baron von Caßgoure and Catharina Ouggelbey, he had many ancestors on his father's side who came from Silesia and Thuringia. Among them were lawyers, doctors and mathematicians. It got its name from the brother of his grandfather (Martin Schöner), Johannes Schöner , who was a highly respected mathematician in Nuremberg and whom Philipp Melanchthon once praised for his books.

He was tutored by private tutors himself in his childhood and was able to move into the University of Edinburgh in 1611 at the age of 14 . There he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy on July 25, 1615 . On August 5th he went on an educational trip to Germany. Coming via Copenhagen , he attended the University of Greifswald , then the University of Leipzig and stayed for a year at the University of Wittenberg , where he studied with Ernestus Hettenbach , Daniel Sennert and Tobias Tandler . In 1617 he went to the University of Frankfurt (Oder) , where he attended the lectures of Franciscus Omichius and Johann Weidner. In 1619 he returned to Greifswald, where he was practically active.

In 1621 he went to the royal court in London via Rostock , Wismar , Lübeck , Hamburg , Gröningen , Franeker and Leiden , where he also found a job. He continued to attend the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge , returned to Greifswald and became a licentiate in medicine on October 24, 1622 ; in the same year he received his doctorate in medicine, immediately afterwards was appointed associate professor of philosophy and finally in 1628 received a full professorship in philosophy.

After the death of Johann Sturm , he became a full professor of medicine and soon thereafter also a senior professor in the medical faculty. In this capacity he was rector of the Greifswald University in 1632/33 and dean of the medical faculty several times . In 1637 he went to Stralsund because of the war riots, while his teaching post took over a substitute. On the night of April 19th, he had a seizure and gave off bloody pus. All help was useless and he died at 5 o'clock in the afternoon at the age of 59. His body was buried on April 24, 1656 in St. Jacobi Church in Stralsund .
