History and architecture

John's Church, view from 1894

The St. John's Church emerged from the parish church , first documented in 1214 , which was consecrated to John the Baptist and Dionysius of Paris . Due to excavations in the vicinity of the church, local history researchers are now certain that a church - probably a small chapel - must have stood in its place as early as the 9th or 10th century .

With the arrival of the Reformation in Witten, the Johanniskirche became a Protestant church in 1582 .

The hall church with a three-sided choir and a west tower stands on a walled terrace above the market square. The baroque church , built in 1752, was attached to the tower, which is probably Romanesque in its core . The building was extended to the east by two axes in 1856. After destruction in the Second World War , a new hall was set up in the surrounding walls in 1952. The church windows were designed by Egon Stolterfoht . The tower hood was put on in 1953. The simple quarry stone building is structured by arched windows and portals . The name 1752 can be found on the portals. A flat arched ceiling was drawn into the simple interior.
