The Johannser Kogel is a 377  m high hill on the mountainous western edge of the 13th Viennese district Hietzing . It rises about 200 meters above the Wiental .

geography

The Johannser Kogel is located in the western part of the Hietzing district and is part of the nature reserve of the Lainzer Tiergarten . To the southwest of the hill is the Brandberg and to the east the somewhat higher Hagenberg . The completely wooded elevation is part of the Vienna Woods Mountains , the northeastern foothills of the Eastern Alps , and lies in the Johannser Forest of the same name. In the west and north of the Johannser Kogel the red water flows around, on the western slope there are again parts of the headwaters of the Grünauer Bach . Both streams flow into the Vienna .

Origin of name

The name of the Johannser Kogel was first documented in 1925 as Johannserkogel . The name comes from the Johannser forest in which the hill is located. The name of this forest area was first mentioned in 1687 as St. Johann (s) Waldt and goes back to the former owner of the area, the Order of St. John ( Order of Malta ). Other field names in this area such as the Johannser Schütt in the west ( alluvial surface of the Grünauer Bach), the Johannser Rennweg (a path through the area) and the Johannser Wiese south of the hill have their origins in the former owners.

Natural forest reserve

The Johannser Kogel was declared a natural forest reserve in 1972 and left to develop naturally. 45 hectares of the 70 hectare reserve are fenced and not accessible to visitors to the Lainzer Tiergarten. In the natural forest reserve there are around 400-year-old oaks with trunks of more than four meters. While oaks and on the sunny slopes hornbeams grow, can be found on the shady slopes Book . The tree species field maple and ash are also represented on the Johannser Kogel .
