John Abram Aldrich

John Abram Aldrich (born March 3, 1878 in Clifford , Wellington County , Ontario , Canada , † November 19, 1972 in Battle Creek , Calhoun County , Michigan , United States ) was a Canadian -born American physicist and astronomer .

Life

Family and education

John Abram Aldrich, son of Aaron Aldrich (1833-1907) and the Irish- born Mary Jane Boulger Aldrich (1841-1917), who came from the Unincorporated Community of Clifford in the province of Ontario , moved with his family to the United States as a child. After completing compulsory schooling, followed by several years of professional activity, he devoted himself to studying mathematics , physics and astronomy at Albion College, graduating in 1914 with a Bachelor of Arts . Aldrich studies continued at the University of Michigan continues, in 1915 he obtained the degree of Master of Arts , in 1923 he became Doctor of Philosophy PhD .

John Abram Aldrich, a member of the Congregational Church , married Clara Belle Cady on June 24, 1916. The children Lyman Cady, Clare Aaron and Jane Carrier came from the connection. Aldrich died in November 1972 at the age of 94.

Professional background

John Abram Aldrich was Deputy Collector and Customs Inspector in the port of Sault Ste. From 1903 to 1912 . Marie is employed in the state of Michigan. In 1916, Aldrich began teaching at Olivet College. In 1918 John Abram Aldrich accepted a call as Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Washburn College in Topeka in the US state of Kansas . In 1925 he moved to Oglethorpe University in Brookhaven in the US state of Georgia in the same function . John Abram Aldrich, who also served as Dean of the School of Science, resigned in 1943. He then worked as Professor of Mathematics at Potomac State College in Keyser in the US state of West Virginia . From 1948 he taught as Professor of Physics at Lebanon Valley College in Annville in the US state of Pennsylvania , in 1950 he was adopted into retirement.

John Abram Aldrich, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , a member of the American Astronomical Society and the Sigma Xi Scientific Association , specialized in Cepheid research .
