John Keith Boles (born January 31, 1888 in Fort Smith , † July 16, 1952 in San Antonio ) was an American sports marksman .
successes
John Boles took part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris , where he competed in five competitions. With the small caliber rifle, he took twelfth place in the prone position. In the running deer discipline he achieved the best result with 40 hits in a single shot and thus became Olympic champion in front of Cyril Mackworth-Praed and Otto Olsen , while he finished the competition in seventh place in a double shot. In the team competitions he was fifth in the double shot, in the single shot he won the bronze medal together with Dennis Fenton , Raymond Coulter and Walter Stokes . 1922 in Milan , 1923 in Camp Perry and 1924 in Reims , Boles won the world title with the team in the three-position fight with the free rifle. He also secured silver with her in 1925 in St. Gallen . In individual competitions in 1923 he won silver with the free rifle in the prone position and bronze in the standing position. 1931 Boles was in Lwów both single shot and double shot world champion . With the small caliber rifle in the prone position, he won bronze.
Boles was a career soldier. After several years of membership in the Arkansas National Guard , he joined the US Army in 1912 and served for several years in the Philippines . At the time of the 1924 Games, he held the rank of major . He eventually retired from active duty as a Colonel . His son John Boles junior also made a career in the US Army and rose to the rank of general.
