John Chang Yik

John Chang Yik , also: John of the Cross Chang Yik, ( Kor. 장익 십자가 의 요한 ; * November 20, 1933 in Keijō , former Japanese Empire , today's South Korea ; † August 5, 2020 ) was a South Korean clergyman and Roman Catholic Bishop of Chuncheon .

Life

John Chang Yik was one of seven children of former South Korean Prime Minister and Vice President Chang Myon . John Chang Yik was ordained a priest on March 30, 1963 after completing his theological studies in the USA, Belgium and Austria . He was first secretary to the Archbishop of Seoul , then pastor. He was a professor at the Theological Institute at Sogang University in Seoul . In 1984 he organized the trip of Pope John Paul II to Korea. In 1989 he was the organizer of the World Eucharistic Congress "Christ Pax Nostra" in Seoul.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Chuncheon on November 11, 1994. The Archbishop of Seoul, Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan , donated him episcopal ordination on December 14 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Victorinus Youn Kong-hi , Archbishop of Gwangju , and Nicholas Cheong Jin-Suk , Bishop of Cheongju . From 2006 to 2010 he was also Apostolic Administrator of the Hamhŭng Diocese in North Korea . On January 28, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.

John Chang Yik was chairman of the Bishops' Conference of South Korea from 2006 to 2008.
