Sir John "Jack" Steven Cowans , GCB , GCMG , KStJ , MVO (born March 11, 1862 in Carlisle , Cumbria , England , † April 16, 1921 in Menton , Alpes-Maritimes , France ) was a British officer in the British Army which as recently General 1912-1919 Quartermaster General of the army ( Quartermaster-General to the Forces ) was.

Life

Training and uses as an officer

John Steven Cowans began officer training at the Royal Military College (RMC) Sandhurst after attending Burney's Academy in Gosport, founded in 1791 . After graduation, he was taken on January 22, 1881 as a lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) in the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own) . On August 11, 1902, he became a member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO). After numerous uses as an officer and staff officer in the garrison Aldershot and the British Indian Army , he was a Major General (Major-General) in December 1908 commander of the local 8th (Lucknow) Division belonging presidential Brigade (Presidency Brigade) in Calcutta and has held this post formally until December 1910. Quartermaster General and First World War

For his services in the First World War , Lieutenant General Jack Cowans became a Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium on September 24, 1917 and a Grand Officer of the French Legion of Honor on September 25, 1925 . On January 1, 1918, he was also Grand Cross ( Knight Grand Cross ) awarded the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG). Furthermore, he became Knight of Grace (KStJ) of the Order of Saint John on March 25, 1918 and received the Grand Cross of the Japanese Order of the Holy Treasure on November 9, 1918 .

After the end of the First World War, John Steven Cowans became a general member of the Royal Army Council for the first time on January 14, 1919 . On March 20, 1919, when he left active military service and retired, he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB). On July 12, 1919, he was also honored with the US Army Distinguished Service Medal and on October 24, 1919 with the Grand Cross of the Greek Order of Savior . On February 17, 1920 he was also awarded the Order of Chia-Ho Second Class of the Republic of China .

After his death on April 16, 1921 in Menton in the French department of Alpes-Maritimes , he was buried in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in the London borough of Kensal Green .
