John Hung
John Hung Chinese: Hung Shan-Chuan SVD ( Chinese 洪山川 , Pinyin Hóng Shānchuān , born November 20, 1943 on the island of Penghu ) is a Taiwanese religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Taipei in Taiwan .
Life
Hung Shan-Chuan entered the novitiate of the Steyler Missionaries in the Philippines in 1967 . In 1973 he made his perpetual vows and was ordained a priest on June 23 of the same year in Tagaitay, Philippines .
After his ordination he was pastor in Chuchi and Chiayi (1975–1977), English teacher and employee of the Fu Jen School in Chiayi (1977–1979), secretary of the committees for the mission and for the laity of the Bishops' Conference and spiritual guide for the young Christian Worker (1979-1981).
He studied educational science at the Catholic University of America in Washington (1981-1986) and received his doctorate there as a Doctor of Education . He was then Associate Professor and Dean at the Catholic Center of Fu Jen University (1986–1987), Dean for Student Affairs at Fu Jen University, Commissioner for Prison Pastoral Care, Spiritual Advisor for lay ministries in the Archdiocese of Taipei (1987–1991), Rector of Fu Jen Catholic School in Chiayi and professor at Taipei Catholic University from 1992 until his appointment as bishop.
He was elected three times as a member of the Provincial Council of the Steyler Missionaries and was deputy provincial during a term of office .
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Chiayi on January 16, 2006 . The former bishop of Kaohsiung , Paul Cardinal Shan Kuo-hsi SJ , donated him the episcopal ordination on February 28 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Joseph Cheng Tsai-fa , Archbishop of Taipei, and Peter Liu Cheng-chung , Bishop of Kaohsiung. On November 9, 2007, he was named Archbishop of Taipei.
Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on May 23, 2020.
