John Ashbery (born July 28, 1927 in Rochester , † September 3, 2017 in Hudson ) was an American poet and Pulitzer Prize winner .

Life

John Ashbery was born in Rochester in 1927 and grew up in upstate New York . He studied at Harvard University , where he met Kenneth Koch , Frank O'Hara and James Schuyler . The term New York School of Poets was later coined for her and Barbara Guest . This was an avant-garde movement that emphasized spontaneity and humor and thus formed a counterpoint to the more academically oriented poets of the time. In 1975 he received the Pulitzer Prize for the volume Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror . Ashbery taught at Bard College in New York State until 2008 .

His poetry is often "subjectless", without the clear voice of a first-person narrator. His poems often deal with the relationship between chaos and art, recreating the experience of consciousness. Despite his spontaneity, his work is considered by many to be difficult to access. According to the poet James Dickey , his poetry is "very difficult or perhaps impossible". Others see his style as liberating. Harold Bloom , a major critic at Yale University , considers him the most important poet in the United States after World War II.

In 1980 he was appointed a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters , 1983 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and 2006 the Accademia dei Lincei . In 1985 he was a MacArthur Fellow . In 1992 he received the international Antonio Feltrinelli Prize and in 2011 a National Book Award for his life's work. He was also a member of the Legion of Honor (officer) and holder of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (knights).
