Life

John Mary Dunne, son of farmer Michael Dunne and his wife Mary ( nee Hennessy ), was educated by the Christian Brothers in Mitchelstown and attended Mount Melleray College . He then studied at the Catholic Missionary College of All Hallows in Drumcondra , Dublin and was ordained a priest on June 24, 1870 by William Lanigan , Bishop of Goulburn .

Dunne was posted to Australia , arrived in Sydney on February 2, 1871 , and began serving in the Diocese of Bathurst. In 1875 he became parish priest in Dubbo . In 1885, Bishop Joseph Patrick Byrne gave him the administration of the parish district of Bathurst. Under his leadership the local monastery of the Patrician Brothers was built and the cathedral was enlarged. In 1896 he returned to Dubbo at his own request and collected £ 4,000 to pay off the debts of the local church. Four years later, in August 1900, Dunne was appointed Vicar General of Bathurst.

After the death of Bishop Byrne, Dunne was on January 12, 1901 by Pope Leo XIII. appointed by the new bishop Bathurst and received on 8 September 1901 by the Archbishop of Sydney, Patrick Francis Cardinal Moran , the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were Jeremiah Joseph Doyle , Bishop of Lismore , and John Gallagher , Bishop of Goulburn.

Dunne made sure that a church and other ecclesiastical institutions existed in each parish. Through his commitment, including in the education sector, he was very popular among the people of the diocese. He died on August 22, 1919 in the bishop's residence of complications from cancer and was buried in Bathurst cemetery .
