John Dengler
John Morgan Dengler (born June 20, 1927 in East Stroudsburg , Pennsylvania , † July 25, 1994 ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , trumpet , cornet , trombone , tuba , composition , also washboard and kazoo ). According to JazzTimes , he was a "seriously underrated" soloist on the bass saxophone .
Live and act
Dengler studied at Princeton University (1944–1950), interrupted in 1946/47 by completing military service in the US Army. After initially working as a journalist in 1948/49 and briefly in the advertising industry in his home town of Stroudsburg in 1950, he also began to work as a jazz musician. After first recordings in Princeton with The Intensely Vigorous Jazz Band , he played in the New York region a. a. with Marty Grosz , with whom he led a Dixieland band, including Dick Wellstood , and with Bobby Hackett , Jerry Shard , Don Ewell , Don Goldie , Rex Stewart , Pee Wee Russell , Billy Maxted , Stan Rubin and Jabbo Smith . In the field of jazz he was involved in 43 recording sessions between 1948 and 1970, most recently with Andy Bartha / Billy Butterfield . According to Leonard Feathers , Dengler had a great deal of flexibility both in the rhythm section and in his role as a soloist.
