John Perkins Ralls

John Perkins Ralls (born January 1, 1822 in Greensboro , Georgia , † November 22, 1904 in Gadsden , Alabama ) was an American doctor and politician . He was also a Methodist pastor from the age of 19 .

Career

John Perkins Ralls was born in Greene County about seven years after the end of the British-American War . Nothing is known about his youth. He graduated in the spring of 1840 at the Medical College in Augusta ( Richmond County ) and then started in the summer of 1844 in Cassville ( Bartow County to practice). For further medical studies he was in Paris ( France ) from 1846 to 1847 . His student years and his first years as a doctor were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . On August 1, 1847, he married in Cassaville Agnes Mary Hamilton († 1899), daughter of Sarah T. Blount and Joseph Hamilton. The couple had eight children together, six of whom reached adulthood. In 1850 the family moved to Alabama , where they settled in Cherokee County . In early 1861 he represented Cherokee County as a delegate to the Secession Assembly. In November 1861 he was elected to the First Confederate Congress for the third constituency of Alabama , where he took up his post on February 18, 1862. In his re-election in 1863 for the second Confederate Congress , he suffered a defeat and then resigned from the Confederate Congress on February 17, 1864 . After the end of the Civil War , took part in 1875 as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of Alabama. Ralls sat in the Alabama House of Representatives in 1878 .

Ralls died after several weeks of illness at the age of 82 in Gadsden ( Etowah County ) and was buried there in Forrest Cemetery .
