Cartersville is a city and also the county seat of Bartow County in the US state of Georgia with 19,731 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Cartersville is located in the northwest of the state on the north bank of the Etowah River . The city borders directly on the city of Emerson in the southeast and is located about 50 km northwest of Atlanta .

history

Various Indian remains have been found in the vicinity of the city. First, that of the Cartersville culture from around 200 BC. And those of the mound-builder cultures around 1000. The older remains are interpreted as trading posts and opened to the public as the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site .

In the 1840s, Cartersville received a rail connection through the Western and Atlantic Railroad . The city played a major role during the Atlanta campaign from May to September 1864.

As part of the campaign, the village of Cassville , founded in 1833 and 10 kilometers away, was destroyed. The approximately 1300 residents did not rebuild the place and moved to Cartersville.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 19,731 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 7,250 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.60 people per household. There are a total of 8,171 households.

67.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.17 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 36.9% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 25.1% of all households.

28.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 18.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 48.5% of the population were male and 51.5% were female.

70.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 18.5% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 1.0% as Asian Americans . 6.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 12.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 47,076 USD , while 20.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Cartersville is crossed by Interstate 75 , US Highways 41 and 411, and Georgia State Routes 20 , 61 , 113 and 293 . The nearest airport is Atlanta Airport (around 80 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 324 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were seven rapes, 16 robberies, 35 assaults, 161 break-ins, 692 thefts, 51 car thefts and two arson attacks.
