John Pritchard (conductor)
Sir John Michael Pritchard (born February 5, 1921 in London , † December 5, 1989 in Daly City ) was an English conductor .
Pritchard has worked at the Glyndebourne Festival since 1947 , was its music director from 1969 to 1978 and later also chief conductor of the Cologne Opera . He conducted in the opera houses of Vienna , London ( Covent Garden ), Chicago , New York , Brussels and San Francisco , as well as at the Salzburg Festival .
Since 1962 he has been in command of the Order of the British Kingdom. In 1983 he was beaten to Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). At the end of his career, he was appointed Music Director of the San Francisco Opera, a position created especially for him. Pritchard was recognized for his rehearsals of Mozart operas as well as for his knowledge of contemporary music.
