John Reilly (born June 8, 1939 in Jersey City , † July 28, 2013 in Palm Beach Gardens ) was an American documentary filmmaker .

life and work

John Leo Reilly was born in Jersey City, New Jersey , in 1939 . As a student at Seton Hall University , he developed a radio program on avant-garde theater, made experimental films and received his bachelor's degree . Reilley completed a postgraduate degree and received a Masters from New York University .

In 1969, together with Rudi Stern and a few other colleagues, John Reilly founded Global Village Media, a center for experimental video and performance in Manhattan . Abbie Hoffman , Jerry Rubin and Timothy Leary were regular viewers.

Reilly produced several video films. The Irish Tapes (1971 to 1974 in collaboration with Stefan Moore ) and Waiting for Beckett (1973) received the greatest attention.

The Irish Tapes is a documentary that was created in collaboration with Global Village Media and was partly funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono . The film was made over one hundred hours documentary footage and interviews cut that in 1971-1973 Northern Ireland had been added. What was new was the immediacy and subjectivity made possible by the portable Portapak camera and with which the viewer was confronted. Was shown The Irish Tapes , among others in 1977 at the documenta 6 in Kassel .

Waiting for Beckett is the most famous documentary by John Reilly. It shows Samuel Beckett watching one of his own pieces on video and making suggestions on how the piece could be improved.
