John Shoven

John Brayton Shoven (born May 24, 1947 ) is an American economist and university professor who dealt in particular with topics such as corporate finance , social security and retirement provision .

Life

After attending school, John Brayton Shoven began studying physics at the University of California, San Diego , from which he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Physics). He completed a subsequent postgraduate degree in economics at Yale University in 1973 with a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. Economics) and then accepted a professorship for economics at Stanford University . He was also an advisor to the US Treasury Department from 1975 to 1988 and a visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1982 to 1983 . In 1993 he became Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University and held this position until 1998. In 1995 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Shoven dealt in particular with topics such as corporate finance , social security and pension provision . He was also a researcher and fellow for the National Science Foundation , the National Bureau of Economic Research , the Hoover Institution and the Econometric Society . He was also a board member of the management consultancies Watson Wyatt , Exponent , the software manufacturer Cadence Design Systems and American Century Funds .

His son Jimmy Shoven was born from his marriage to Katie Shoven.
