John Thomas Dunlop (born July 5, 1914 in Placerville , California , † October 2, 2003 in Boston ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), professor at Harvard University and from March 18, 1975 to January 31, 1976 14. United States Secretary of Labor .

Life

Personal and training

John Thomas Dunlop was born in Placerville in 1914 to John Wallace and Antonia Forni. However, he spent a large part of his childhood on Cebu , an island in the Philippines . It was here that Dunlop graduated from high school and then moved to California, where he first attended Marin Community College and later the University of California at Berkeley . In 1935 he finished his economics studies and received his doctorate four years later. In 1937 he married Dorothy Emily Webb, with whom he had three children. His wife died a few months before Dunlop.

Political career

Dunlop had taught at Harvard University since 1938 and completed his habilitation in 1950 and continued to work at Harvard University. In 1957 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1972 to the American Philosophical Society . Between 1975 and 1976 he was the 14th Secretary of Labor of the United States under Gerald Ford .
