John Waine

John Waine KCVO (born June 20, 1930 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich from 1978 to 1986 and Bishop of Chelmsford in the Church of England from 1986 to 1996 .

Waine was born to William Waine. He attended Prescot Grammar School and the University of Manchester . He did his military service in the Royal Air Force . In preparation for his priesthood, he studied theology at Ridley Hall College , Cambridge . He began his priestly career from 1955 to 1958 as vicar ( curate ) at St Mary's Church in West Derby, a suburb of Liverpool . From 1958 to 1960 he was vicar at All Saints Church in Sutton near St. Helens. He then had pastoral positions ( Vicar ) in Ditton in the county of Cheshire (1960-1964), at the Holy Trinity Church in Southport (1964-1969) and as "Rector" in Kirkby in the Diocese of Liverpool (1969-1975). In 1975 he was ordained a bishop . From 1975 to 1978 he was as "Bishop of Stafford" Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Lichfield in the Church of England. In 1978 he succeeded Leslie Brown as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England. He held this office until 1986. John Dennis succeeded him as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich . In 1986 he succeeded John Trillo , Bishop of Chelmsford. His enthronement took place on May 31, 1986 at Chelmsford Cathedral . He held this office until 1996. In 1996 he retired. John Perry succeeded him as Bishop of Chelmsford . In 1989 he took over the honorary office of Clerk of the Closet from John Bickersteth . He was the first court chaplain of the queen to be a member of the royal household. In 1996 he resigned from this office; he was succeeded in this capacity by Jonathan Bailey .

Waine received an honorary doctorate from the University of Essex . Waine was also until June 2007 Prelate ( Prelate ) of the Order of Saint John .

Waine married his wife Patricia Zena Haikney in 1957, the daughter of Captain Bertram Stevenson Haikney. The marriage had three children.

Membership in the House of Lords

Waine served as Ecclesiastical Lord of the House of Lords in his capacity as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich and as Bishop of Chelmsford from late January 1985 to late April 1996 until his retirement as Bishop of Chelmsford .
